This summer my son went to sleep away camp for the first time. Even though there was no doubt in his mind that he was ready to go camp, I was very hesitant to be without my oldest for 2 weeks. Reading through the do’s and do not’s from camp, I quickly realized a plus side to camp- handwritten letters! With the technology of iMessage, Skype, WebEx, emails and texts, when was the last time you sat down and wrote a note, just because? Not a requisite thank you note for a birthday or bridal shower gift or Mother’s Day card, but a simple “thinking of you” note. Don’t worry, I can’t remember either.
I forgot how much fun it is to write a sweet note in cursive. No abbreviations, no emoticons. Just words. In the 2 weeks my son was gone, I received 4 letters from him and wrote seven for him. I loved going to the mailbox and reading his letters about his camp adventures while I walked back to my house.
